Flying With You
The magical adventure when Jeff took me flying for the very first time.
It was one of those quiet mornings where the world still felt soft and half-asleep. We had been lying together under the boardwalk, sitting on the cool, damp sand. The sound of the waves was gentle in the background, and I could feel every tiny grain pressing against my skin as we sat there in comfortable silence.
You turned to me with that little spark in your voice and said, “Sam… come with me. I have a surprise for you.”
I smiled. “A surprise?”
You whispered, “Follow me,” and offered your hand.
We stood up and walked a short distance to a clearer stretch of beach where the sand was smoother and cooler. I could feel every grain beneath my feet — cool, shifting, alive. You stopped and turned to face me.
“Hold your arms down,” you said softly, “just a little away from your body. Not straight out — just relaxed.”
I did as you asked.
“Now push down with your arms. Keep pushing… and eventually you’ll feel it.”
I pushed.
At first, nothing happened. Then I felt a strange, warm pressure building in my chest. It was subtle, like a gentle lift from inside. You kept talking, calm and patient.
“You’ll feel it travel down your arms. Keep pushing… slowly at first.”
I kept pushing.
Very slowly, ever so slowly, I began to feel the sand moving away from my feet. The grains no longer pressed against my soles the same way. I was lifting — just a fraction at first, then a little more with each push. Each small rise seemed to add to the one before it, building momentum.
“Keep pushing,” you said, your voice warm with excitement.
I pushed harder.
Suddenly we were rising together. Higher and higher. The beach fell away beneath us. The wind rushed past my face and through my hair. I laughed — a real, breathless laugh — as the speed started to build. Faster and faster we climbed, side by side.
